Preparing for a digital healthcare future

The background
The Nordic Digital Health & Education (NorDigHE) – is an ambitious cross-border initiative bringing together public and private stakeholders from Sweden, Norway and Denmark.
The project is funded by Interreg Öresund-Kattegat-Skagerrak, which supports EU collaboration across borders in southern Scandinavia.
The shared goal?
To create a scalable digital training programme for healthcare professionals supporting the Hospital-at-Home model, where care moves from hospitals to patients’ homes using digital tools.
The NorDigHE consortium includes eight partners:
- Hospitals: Sahlgrenska University Hospital (SE), Nordsjællands Hospital (DK).
- Universities & colleges: Lund University (SE), Københavns Professionshøjskole (DK), Østfold University College (NO).
- Companies: Skillhabit (SE), Mount Visual (NO), Copenhagen Game Lab (DK).
The challenge
eHealth and virtual care are growing rapidly – but training hasn’t kept up. Few nurses, doctors or healthcare professionals have received formal education on how to deliver care digitally – a critical skill in tomorrow’s healthcare systems.
International research highlights two major barriers to successful eHealth adoption:
- Lack of digital competence.
- Low psychological safety when using new technologies in clinical settings.
With multiple stakeholders and countries involved, the NorDigHE project needed a flexible platform and a blended learning solution – one that could unite input from over 30 experts, while delivering a scalable, engaging learning experience.

The solution
Skillhabit acted as the central hub for the solution, leading the creation and delivery of a full blended learning experience through its platform.
Key elements included:
- A blended learning structure hosted on Skillhabit’s learning platform.
- Interactive eLearning modules developed using Skillhabit’s built-in content creator.
- Over 60 animated scenarios, produced in Vyond and based on real-life clinical situations.
- A learning experience combining storytelling, self-reflection and practical exercises.
The content was co-created in close collaboration with over 30 experts – clinicians, researchers, educators and specialists from across the three countries.
Additional partners contributed with:
- Game-based learning elements
- Research insights and pedagogical frameworks
- Medical literature and clinical expertise
The final training includes:
- Interactive eLearning and videos
- Gamified activities
- Theory and literature
- Practical exercises for on-the-job application
By the project’s completion in 2026:
- At least 400 doctors, nurses and students will have completed the course.
- A complete 3-week blended training will be ready for use by hospitals and health education programmes in Scandinavia.
- Digital care-at-home will be embedded as a natural part of future healthcare training.

The impact
The programme is currently in its test and refinement phase, with rollout and final adjustments ongoing. But already, the collaboration and results are exceeding expectations.
More than just a course, this initiative is a strategic step towards future-proofing healthcare systems – equipping professionals with the digital confidence and competence they need to deliver care where it matters most: at home.
"As part of the NorDigHE EU Interreg project, we have a great collaboration with Skillhabit. Following project needs, Skillhabit have developed a tailored online learning platform supporting the new and fully digital hospital-at-home education we're creating across the Nordic region. The working processes have been highly constructive, with clear communication, shared problem-solving and a strong focus on user needs. The resulting platform itself seems to be not only technically robust but also aligned very well with our pedagogical and didactic goals – whilst also catering well to what's needed in terms of scalability, usability and flexibility. I'm confident that what we're creating collaboratively with Skillhabit and the other public and private partners in the consortium will end up delivering solid learning experiences for health care staff and students, translating hopefully and in due turn into meaningful impacts on real-life clinical practice."
